Implementation isn’t just another phase, it’s the moment where months (or even years) of planning, collaboration, and innovation come to life. It’s where vision meets execution, and where teams rally together to deliver meaningful, tangible impact.
At its core, the implementation phase is about deploying a solution that meets business needs while ensuring a seamless transition for staff, customers, and the production environment. It’s a high-stakes, high-reward process that demands precision, resilience, and teamwork.
A proven approach to implementation success
Through years of working on large-scale transformation programs, I’ve seen first-hand what drives successful implementations. A structured, phased approach has consistently been the key to ensuring smooth transitions and mitigating risks.
At Bendigo & Adelaide Bank, we recently applied this methodology to rolling out the new Lending Platform as part of the Build for Scale Program – a huge milestone made possible by an exceptional team, including the incredible efforts of Nisha Prabhu and Jeff Bennett-Hullin.
Our implementation approach consisted of five gated phases, each serving as a checkpoint to maintain alignment, manage risks, and confirm readiness before advancing:
Planning – Laying the groundwork, developing run-books & rosters, and setting the implementation strategy.
Dress Rehearsal – A full-scale practice run, just like in theatre, to identify issues before go-live.
Preparation – Finalising logistics, securing approvals from the Change Advisory Board and the Business, and completing pre-cutover tasks.
Cutover – The pivotal transition to the new system with minimal disruption.
Hypercare & Warranty – Ensuring stability post-implementation and providing support as needed as the program transitions to business as usual.
The Dress Rehearsal phase is particularly crucial – it replicates real-world conditions, allowing teams to fine-tune processes, address potential challenges, and ensure a flawless execution when it truly counts.
With several significant implementations still ahead this year at Bendigo & Adelaide Bank, I am grateful to be part of a team that embraces both the excitement and the challenges of implementation. A well-structured, battle-tested methodology, combined with the dedication of talented professionals, makes all the late nights and problem-solving efforts truly worthwhile.
